PTC issues an attack and Blackvoices offers a solution to an attack

Two other news issues that I had to mention, while I rarely blog twice a week, these items were simply too meaty to pass up.

First with the PTC unleashing a video alert on GTA 4, I am wondering whether it is possible for purveyors of media to express themselves freely without controversy…then I kicked myself and said that was impossible.

Personally, this GTA controversy is wearing thin; all the negative attention that this game is attracting will simply lead to more sales.

Speaking of controversy, Blackvoices.com found a funny way to resolve the controversy between Barack Obama and Jesse Jackson. The report is here and the video can be seen below:

Secret enemies and rare metals

Categories: Games and Social Issues

Has anyone taken a look inside their Playstation 2s lately?

As it turns out, there is a rare metal called coltan that was in high demand by Sony and other electronics companies to ensure the system’s smooth operation.

While this metal may not seem like much, its high demand by Sony and other electronic manufactures have led to Rwandan troops and Western companies exploiting the people and mineral resources of Congo, with children often forced to work in mines.

Gamepolitics has the report here; knowing this piece of information is causing me to really take a second look at what goes into my systems. It also serves as a reminder of the West’s unfair treatment of Africa as well. It is ironic that the U.S. disrespects a nation that has given the most to us in terms of life and wealth.

In other related news, every one in gaming is familiar with Grand Theft Auto. The controversial nature of their content has caused parental groups and politicians to raise their arms in disgust at the company. Interestingly, Sam Houser, one of the company’s personnel, claims that ‘powerful people’ are out to get him, his report is here.

Personally, I think that controversial content unfortunately invites attention; yet I still think that Rockstar Games is the sole developer that is willing to use games as a storytelling medium, with some exceptions of course.
